i live about four blocks from eastern market, and was saddened to hear about the fire that ravaged it the other night.
i like shopping at the market, and just enjoy having it in my neighborhood. it’s always a reliable go-to when i need to get presents (flowers, baked goods, fresh fruit) but i also like the way that it has created a whole range of weekend options.
and i’m still having trouble believing that it looked like this, as captured by the city paper:

on my way home from work last night, i swung by the market to survey the damage, and quite frankly, it was much better than i expected. i didn’t get to see the inside, of course, but what struck me was how solid the outside appeared. while there was certainly smoke damage to the exterior, the building’s shell remains largely unchanged.
i couldn’t help but appreciate the worksmanship of adolf cluss, who designed this building, as well as several of the smithsonian buildings, in washington.
at any rate, i was encouraged by the “we will rebuild” sign by eastern market, and i can’t wait until they do.
