i was catching up on some new york times reading last night, and caught this small piece about the induction of van halen into the rock and roll hall of fame:
The members of Van Halen to be inducted are the brothers Alex and Eddie Van Halen; the bassist Michael Anthony; and David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar, who have replaced one another as the band’s lead singer more than once. Gary Cherone, who sang with the group in the late 1990s between Mr. Roth’s second stint and Mr. Hagar’s, was not recognized.
now, i’m not really a fan of the rock and roll hall of fame, but i wholeheartedly endorse this decision. and that’s not just because gary cherone contributed absolutely zero to the success of van halen, and thus does not deserve to share in this honor.
rather, it’s because gary cherone contributed a WHOLE LOT to the success of the insipid band extreme. you and their song “more than words,” which essentially says:
“listen, you can tell me you love me, which i might not believe or you can put out”
and then gussies it up with pretty guitars and vocals to make it sound like a love song. ugh!
oh, and also – if you dress like this:

you shouldn’t be building your career on acoustic ballads.

What?? I thought More Than Words was about holding hands, although if it were my song it would be about baking me a pie.
I do think it’s a shame that the Hall did not recognize the contributions of youngest Van Halen brother, Tito. Nevertheless, I actually used to feel bad for Gary Cherone until I saw that picture.
